Quick Luddite Notes

✒️ Broken Markdown editors ⚠️ UPDATE: Oct. 3

Good, decent Markdown editors are scarce, especially multi-platform ones (Linux and Windows).

Ferrite is quite nice, but only for text: [Bug] Images are not displayed at all (local images) #182.

Markpad (small "p") is even better, but it's completely useless in Linux: Copy doesn't work in the editor (paste works) #729.

What the fucking fuck?!

Markdown Monster is an abomination. It works, but it seems designed by an old, half-blind person. Windows-only, BTW.

Oct. 3 UPDATE: Markpad v2.8.3 fixed the broken copy functionality! This is wrongly listed as follows:

Wayland paste works. On Linux under Wayland, paste reads the system clipboard instead of the last thing copied inside Markpad.

But the bug also under XFCE (X11), because X11 has no clipboard store, whereas GNOME, at least as tested by the developer, had one. The app assumed “someone” would keep the selection and destroyed the owner of the clipboard. Now the implementation has changed. And I believe the changelog description above is completely bogus: if the developer only tested the Linux version under GNOME, that was most likely a Wayland session. Either way, as I understood it, the idea was not to kill the clipboard’s owner if no global owner exists. As the developer himself wrote:

On X11 there is no clipboard store: the copying process owns the CLIPBOARD selection and hands the bytes over when another app asks for them.

...

Wayland goes through wl-clipboard-rs, which forks a process that outlives us, and macOS and Windows write into a store the system owns.

So the fix is definitely for X11, not for Wayland!
