Apple is still the worst of all
André Alves Garzia is a software developer, technologist, and educator originally from Niterói, Brazil, but now living in Edinburgh, Scotland, with his cat. He just made my day with his most recent blog post and, should Dedoimedo read it… uh, let’s stop here.
This is what made my day! Apple Just Lost Me:
Apple has just lost me as a user. It will take me a while before I can fully migrate away from their devices, and I suspect I might need to keep a Mac around for my work, but I will move all my personal computing to Linux and Android again.
I’ve been an Apple user since MacOS 8. I had both a Newton MessagePad 2000 and an eMate 300. I got the original blue toilet-seat iBook G3. I was there for the developer road show introducing MacOS X. I paid for my developer account since then. Recently, I had a Macbook Air, iPhone 17, iPad Mini.
I’m gonna throw all of them away — not literally ofc — because of recent slop this company been shipping. It is death through a thousand papercuts.
His three major complaints:
Gatekeeper
I absolutely hate Apple quarantine and gatekeeping of software. As a developer, I should just be able to ship software to those interested in my apps. Be aware that I don’t give a flying fuck about mobile development, I’m talking about desktop apps here.
I gave in to the Apple racketering scheme and got myself a developer account from the very start. I had to fax my card details to them, that is how long I had my account.
Even though my software is packaged and notarised as per their requirements, they still show my users a dialog box confirming they want to run my app, something they do not for apps installed through their walled garden. This is just friction to punish developers outside their store. I am very tired of it.
Why, this is the same walled garden that Android has, only worse. Apple puts it on the desktop, too. With something like an aggressive SmartScreen, if the comparison is not too far-fetched.
macOS 26
That has been an absolute fiasco. Liquid glass is completely broken from a design point of view. I have no idea how that got out of the door, and now multiple updates in, it still just as bad.
Not only it looks ugly, and that is subjective of course, but it is visually broken. Interfaces built with AppKit or SwiftUI that rendered perfect, are now overlapping controls and clipping stuff. They have no consistency at all in terms of icons, placement, corners…
Well, the macOS design has been rotten for a long time already, but I’m actually glad that the Apple sectarians are starting to notice it, be it only when controls are overlapping and elements are clipped. Windows 11 is catastrophic, too, but it can be worked around, and older apps still display just fine.
Age verification
My iPhone updated last night and per UK laws, it introduced age verification. The way Apple decided to implement this is through credit card checking.
First it attempted to check my Apple Wallet, it failed even though I have five cards in it and am able to use the App Store fine.
Then it moved onto wanting me to manually add a card to verify myself. It failed with all my five cards. Four were debit cards, and one was a credit card from another country, cause you know I am an immigrant who has accounts still in my own original birth place.
So it failed age verification and locked me out of many features. Bear in mind, I am 45 years old. I have an Apple account for 25 years, the age of my personal account alone should already verify my age.
Credit cards are not documents. Many people don’t have them. Apple don’t provide any other way to verify your age because they are a stupid American company with American values in which you’re just as human as your credit score.
Age verification is a scam, but checking it with a credit card is even worse.
That was the cherry on the cake! When Apple fails to determine the majority of a person that has five credit cards in his Apple Wallet, could we still blame Microsoft for being buggy AF? But he should have said, “a stupid American company with stupid American values”!
From the finale:
I was already done with Apple for some months now, but due to that happening today, I am angry af and will speed up my plans.
I’m tired of devices that are not actually mine, of workflows that without blessing from a higher corporate authority won’t work. I’m gonna move back to Linux and Android.
Yeah, I know Google’s gonna fuck Android soon the same way, but at least with Android you tend to have more options.
Music to my ears. This said, Google is another incarnation of Satan, and Android is increasingly shitty. Windows Phone was the best mobile OS in recent history. Also, André knows very well that FirefoxOS wasn’t such a bad idea, but it was installed on really crappy hardware. Samsung’s 2015-2016 attempts with Tizen on the Z1, Z3, and Z2 (in that order) failed for multiple reasons, not just hardware (the Tizen phones were only tested in a few Asian countries). But maybe they would have eventually met the same fate as Windows Phone and fallen victim to the “not enough apps” syndrome, which should be read as “not enough major American apps” and “not enough banking apps.”

Liquid glass is so bad that it’s enough to fire their entire design team and their dark mode icons look absolutely trash – reminds me of icon packs made for android kitkat or something. It’s an accessibility nightmare too. Even people with no disabilities find it hard to read text in their ios notifications and the only solution to this is to increase the blur in the design elements and as you add more blur, you would have the same freaking design you always had!!
I’m surprised that there isn’t a bigger backlash over this shit. When they first introduced Liquid Glass, so many people just lauded it on twitter saying how it’s the best design ever. They did the same with Apple Vision Pro, so I’m not surprised. Let’s just leave design aside for a moment, there are so many complaints from people whose alarms didn’t go off at the time it was supposed to and they missed their meetings.
IOS 26 is a piece of shit and people should be ashamed of defending it and the company.
I live in India and here apple is considered very aspirantional. Everyone wants to buy it first thing after moving away from their android phone. Earlier Apple didn’t use to give any offer on their phones here but from last few years at the end of the year, they give offers selectively on their last year base iphones. And it’s so infuriating to me how well that works here.
Every person I know here who has bought base iphone model is likely to buy “Pro Max” when he decides to upgrade.
I cannot use syncthing on iphones or background downloading which is enough for me to not touch their phones.
