Hugh Howey’s NEO: vibecoding, what else?
Hugh Howey is the author of the Silo Saga (Wool, Shift, and Dust), the science fiction series Silo (Apple TV) is based on. Not such a huge author until Apple…
ComicStripBrowser 3.1.1: Know when and why GoComics flips you off!
The release of ComicStripBrowser 3 left a few situations uncovered, and GoComics’ increasingly strict limitations likely frustrated some users who didn’t know why the app started showing them errors on…
Windows and Firefox colluded to wreck my download speed!
This is an issue I investigated and fixed on August 30. Since Gemini was somewhat confused and proposed some useless changes (no, this had nothing to do with any power…
Woes with Bluetooth and the audio jack in Windows
First, I want to stress that even if the following happened under Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 (Version 21H2 Build 19044.7725), nothing is specific to Windows 10 and…
How I rejected UniGetUI in 15 minutes
I never trusted any “meta” package managers that try to integrate all types of packages into a unified GUI. I already hate how KDE Discover and GNOME Software can also…
ComicStripBrowser 3 is here!
ComicStripBrowser 3.0.0 is out on GitHub, with packages and binaries on SourceForge, too! The changelog for v3.0.0 from GitHub: Major release with substantial changes under the hood. Despite being a…
From Win11 IoT 24H2 to Win10 IoT 21H2 + KB5099539: Mais quelle horreur !
Downgrading from Win11 to Win10 is not something people do, unless they do that between IoT LTSC editions of Windows, and they use UpDownTool_LTSC_v3.iso. My history with the abominable Win11…
Camomile for your Windows laptop (if you really must)
Remember when I wrote Stop drinking Kool-Aid regarding battery life in Linux? Well, how about battery life and laptop's temperature in Windows? Despite using the Balanced power plan, there's no…
ComicStripBrowser now runs on Windows and supports Comics Kingdom too!
It all started with a vibe-coded PyQt6 app that refused to build or to run under Windows, but it worked satisfactorily under Linux. It navigated in the archives of 15…
Curiouser and curiouser…
Why do I feel the need to comment on Dedoimedo’s latest post? Well, because I disagree with a fundamental premise that led to a questionable conclusion. It has to do…
Gemini vs. Fran Blanche + BONUS: crazy units
I don't like Fran Blanche. For someone who's a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), her videos are incredibly shallow. Five years ago, Fran made…
Nothing compares to Beyond Compare for… backups
There aren't many kinds of software I'm willing to pay for. VPNs are one such category. Dictionary apps (or online subscriptions to dictionaries) might be a second one. And Beyond…
I never thought I’ll prefer ONLYOFFICE
I never liked ONLYOFFICE. I hated that it has a unique binary that you have to launch, instead of separate apps for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. I found its ALL-CAPS…
Masochistic me: Win11 IoT on a 2016 laptop slower than N100
Despite my previous post Should we stop wanting to hack-install Win11 on older CPUs?, in which I established that Win11 would be a better fit for my newer Acer, and…
E-book readers on Windows and Android: my 2 cents
I have always favored, literally for decades, the ePub file format for e-books and ranted against Amazon's various Kindle-specific e-book formats. And, oh boy, they have changed in time: from…
I still prefer VMware to VirtualBox
Everyone swears by VirtualBox for Type 2 virtualization, most likely because it has always been free. But it's a complete piece of crap, and never was anything but a pain…
When being European pays the bill: Win10 has one more year
As reported by Bleeping Computer, the consumer protection organization Euroconsumers has managed to determine Microsoft to provide one more year of free security updates to consumers in the EEA, without…
😾 30 Years Defending Linux — Until I Called It Quits
Yeah, I know, the title seems written by a chatbot. Rest assured, the content is not. As announced almost four weeks ago, it's time for me to bid Linux farewell…
There’s more than one Windows: More “secret” editions
In an unexpected post on Windows IoT 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024, I described two special, yet official editions of Windows that have some…
